Oliver Sacks died in August 2015 at his home in Greenwich Village, surrounded by his close friends and family. He was 82. He spent his final days doing what he loved: playing the piano, swimming, enjoying smoked salmon - and writing. As Dr Sacks looked back over his long, adventurous life his final thoughts were of gratitude. In a series of remarkable, beautifully written and uplifting meditations, in Gratitude Dr Sacks reflects on and gives thanks for a life well lived, and expresses his thoughts on growing old, facing terminal cancer and reaching the end. I cannot pretend I am without fear. But my predominant feeling is one of gratitude. I have loved and been loved; I have been given much and I have given something in return; I have read and travelled and thought and written. I have had an intercourse with the world, the special intercourse of writers and readers. Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure.

Gratitude, like other positive emotions, has inspired many theological and philosophical writings, but it has inspired very little vigorous, empirical research. In an effort to remedy this oversight, this volume brings together prominent scientists from various disciplines to examine what has become known as the most-neglected emotion. The volume begins with the historical, philosophical, and theoretical foundations of gratitude, then presents the current research perspectives from social, personality, and developmental psychology, as well as from primatology, anthropology, and biology. The volume also includes a comprehensive, annotated bibliography of research on gratitude. This work contributes a great deal to the growing positive psychology initiative and to the scientific investigation of positive human emotions. It will be an invaluable resource for researchers and students in social, personality, and developmental, clinical, and health psychology, as well as to sociologists and cultural anthropologists.

Teachers at all levels of education will find this book practical and inspiring as they read how other educators have engaged with challenges that reveal different dimensions of gratitude, and how some have discovered its relevance in gaining greater resilience, improved relationships and increased student engagement. In the first comprehensive text ever written that is solely dedicated to the specific relevance of gratitude to the teaching and learning process, Dr Howells pioneers an approach that accounts for both dilemmas and possibilities of gratitude in the midst of teachers’ busy and stressful lives. She takes a contemporary and philosophical view of the notion of gratitude and goes beyond its conceptualisation simply from a religious or positive psychology framework. Exploring real situations with teachers, school leaders, students, parents, academics and pre-service teachers - Gratitude In Education: A Radical View examines many of the complexities encountered when gratitude is applied in a variety of secular educational environments.

In Attitudes of Gratitude, M. J. Ryan teaches readers how to unlock the fullness of their hearts and lives through the expression of gratitude. “Gratitude helps us to return to our natural state of joyfulness,” she writes, “where we notice what’s right instead of what’s wrong. It makes us feel complete, that we have everything we need, at least in this moment.” In her introduction to this 10th anniversary edition, Ryan recounts current research that bolsters her original thinking—people who practice gratitude on a daily basis are, by and large, happier, healthier, and more effective in the world. She also shares with readers brand new, top 10 gratitude practices, which readers of the first edition and people she’s taught and counseled over the years have provided to her. The concept of this book is very simple and very profound: “Gratitude creates happiness.” It’s a fact of life (and science as it turns out). Plants create carbon dioxide and gratitude creates happiness.

Gratitude has a way of increasing the good things that come to and from us, as positivity begets and multiplies positivity. Teens are often criticized for being entitled, greedy, spoiled, and ungrateful. Teens who demonstrate a spirit of gratitude also draw people to them and inspire a desire to help them succeed and reach their goals. This, in turn, results in a strong network of connections, superb college recommendations, employment tips, and great job offers. Teachers and librarians will have reason to feel gratitude when they see how well this text meets various informational text reading standards of the Common Core curriculum, including summarizing text, determining a central idea and its supporting details, tracing and evaluating an argument and its specific claims, determining the validity of the author's reasoning and evidence, and determining an author's point of view and purpose.

March 1944: War's darkest period descends upon Hungary's Jews. By the time it ends in January 1945, over half a million Jews will have been murdered. Gratitude tells the story of that period, through the eyes of the wealthy Beck family, whose lives and loves are saved and lost. At the center of it all is Paul Beck, a young lawyer whose chance meeting with a visiting Swede, Raoul Wallenberg, may alter the inevitability of the Jews' fate. Joseph Kertes's Gratitude captures forever the pain and passion of one's family precious moment in time.

National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist A New York Times Notable Book of the Year. In July 2014, Jenny Diski was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and given "two or three years" to live. She didn't know how to react. All responses felt scripted, as if she were acting out her part. To find the response that felt wholly her own, she had to face the clichés and try to write about it. And there was another story to write, one she had not yet told: that of being taken in at age fifteen by the author Doris Lessing, and the subsequent fifty years of their complex relationship. In the pages of the London Review of Books, to which Diski contributed for the last quarter century, she unraveled her history with Lessing: the fairy-tale rescue as a teenager, the difficulties of being absorbed into an unfamiliar family, the modeling of a literary life. Swooping from one memory to the next--alighting on the hysterical battlefield of her parental home, her expulsion from school, the drug-taking twenty-something in and out of psychiatric hospitals--and telling all through the lens of living with terminal cancer, through what she knows will be her final months, Diski paints a portrait of two extraordinary writers--Lessing and herself. From a wholly original thinker comes a book like no other: a cerebral, witty, dazzlingly candid masterpiece about an uneasy relationship; about memory and writing, ingratitude and anger; about living with illness and facing death.

After the unforeseen death of her mother in 2010, author Laura Steenrod is left feeling grief stricken and vulnerable without the safe haven their relationship provided. Upon arriving home from her mother’s funeral, still wearing her newly purchased black pantsuit, Steenrod sits in the middle of her kitchen floor amid copious amounts of dog hair and makes an anguished plea to her pack of dogs. “Please rescue me!” It is in that moment she realizes that she is surrounded by survival experts. Gratitude shares the story of Steenrod’s own struggles to manage crippling anxiety and grief with the stories of five remarkable dogs. This shared history of struggle becomes a transformative experience for Steenrod as the dogs demonstrate their capacity for healing, acceptance, and loyalty. The stories of her pack become an inspiring survival guide. “The stories are so heartfelt, so individually remarkable, that the readers will find this short volume hard to put down.” (Kirkus Reviews) “An inspiring snapshot of the life of someone who loves animals and will do “just” about anything to protect them. Hard to put down. I highly recommend this book about the woman who started the rescue, Love from Louie.” (Andrew DeAngelis, Chairman, TV Guide Magazine) “I recommend this book to all of those who want to recover from life’s shocks and setbacks, and to find ways to a fuller life through meaningful contact with others—both people and animals. I loved reading this book!” (Randy Evans, Ph.D., author of Out of the Inferno, A Husbands Passage through Cancerland) “Steenrod is a writer and a teacher whose work and life are meant to inspire others. The stories are raw, real, emotional and filled with Anne Lamott-esqe insight. These words will be a lifeline for others who are trying to reach a higher level, be it of hope, renewal, life, love, redemption. . . . The story is universal and unique.” (Wade Rouse, Internationally bestselling author of The Charm Bracelet)

In this century, the topic of gratitude has received little more than passing attention, yet, in earlier periods of Anglo-American moral philosophy, ingratitude was treated as a serious vice. Terrance McConnell provides the first contemporary philosophical exploration of the phenomenon of gratitude. Arguing that it is both an obligation and a moral sentiment, he discusses ways in which gratitude seems to conflict with other important theses in ethical theory. He offers examples from several contexts, including political and filial obligations and relations between friends and casual acquaintances. McConnell describes conditions that generate debts of gratitude, the requirements of such debts, and the relationship between moral requirements and emotions. He discusses the question of whether gratitude toward someone interferes with the impartiality that is morally required in other situations. He also shows how various moral traditions--utilitarianism, Kantianism, and the ethics of virtue--can account for some aspects of the morality of gratitude, but not all. Author note: Terrance McConnell is Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

This commentary is the first to fully apply the resources of socio-rhetorical analysis to Hebrews. Insights into the cultural and social world of the audience are combined with analysis of the author's rhetorical strategy and ideology to create a rich, three-dimensional reading that helps unravel key issues in the interpretation of the epistle. David deSilva's reflections on application concluding each section also make his commentary valuable to seminarians and pastors seeking to make Hebrews relevant to today's world.
